The Salt Lake City Library is a five floor, circular building, designed by Moshe Safdie, which circulation varies outside and within.It´s important to say, that our movements horizontal or vertical are determined by a series of steps or paths that connect realities outside and inside the buildings and connecting spaces. Circulation is the way like we relate to the space and at same time we can see many perspectives of places.
The horizontal circulation of The Salt Lake City Library, is defined by an irregular desing of the floor and is compone by many columns that distribute the space. Also we can point out that in the surroundings of the building there are gardens and a square that have numerous paths, without gradient, which lead to it this makes the access easy but indirect, from the pedestrians’ point of view.
Inside the building we find both types of circulation, horizontal and vertical; the first one is separated in two, one hall which is curved, goes along the windows and covers the stacks, in which the circulation happens around shelves, and opposite to these there is the reading section these can be acceded by bridges and are free of any markers or directions. The vertical circulation is done through stairs and a glass-covered elevator.
The perfect combination of horizontal and vertical circulation can achieve a beautiful and functional place.
